This is one of those things that you are going to think we made up. We didn't. We have been the subject of a scholarly paper that was presented at the American Educational Research Association's annual meeting in San Francisco. According to the study by Colin Lankshear and Michele Knoebel, Blogging Project Runway "constitutes a significant popular culture and participation phenomenon." We're a "social universe" it seems!
You can read their findings here; discussion of BPR begins on page 10. Several of our readers are mentioned including Jan the Dan Fan.
Hi, Colin! Hi, Michele!

What??????
No way.
Ok, read the paper-who knew we were so interesting??? Or that we were being studied?
Too funny.
You know, I work in television, and I've been trying to explain to other TV co-workers what a real cutting-edge phenomenon BPR is and they just don't get it.... I'm others in the academic world are catching on. I'm seeing educational websites where students can blog about their homework... interesting no?! And Kudos to Laura K, Tbone and the The Scarlet for doing such wonderful work.
My favorite part: "What might be said about Laura K.."
Trust me, hardly a day goes by when I don't ponder that one myself!
Oh, wow, this is really wild.
All this because of Laura and her shoe essay on Manolo's Shoe Blog!!! If you didn't come here yourselves, you'd never believe it. I tell friends about it and they look at me like I'm nuts...
Hi Moi,
I agree. My friends just don't get it. This has turned into much more than a fan blogging site.
I'll have to look at the date of the paper-surprised the tour wasn't mentioned.
wow! thats amazing! good job guys!
Holy moly! This is amazing.
I completely agree that this blog as something that I can't explain. I am glad to know this, but its frightening that others are studying it.
But on the other hand of course someone is noticing the great chemistry that is goin on here.

Very interesting article. And of course, the readership of BPR is much greater than just those who comment often. It's very hard to quantify a phenomenon like this, especially as I'm sure there are many readers like myself who check BPR almost everyday, but only comment occasionally, if at all.
Cool blog, cool article. It's noce to know that some people out there "get it."
There is something about the uniqueness that the show began with; capturing the quality of true creativity, the in-depth view into the designers and all of this happening for the participants in real time with deadlines and challenges. The energy from Tim, Heidi, and the judges just adds to the dynamic. This carries over into the BPR site.
Seems like some of us are hooked because of this dynamic. I've taken some courses through the Writer's Workshop online and they are set up somewhat similarly to BPR; all the people in the class can go in and read someone's submission and then comment on it. As a writer this is valuable information and sparks new direction and ideas.
Thanks Laura for the intial spark. Go BPR!
i do research on internet communities myself (i'm most interested in their linguistic behavior). and i've often thought, wow, those BPR people, they are really working hard to create a community -- and they have succeeded. you strive to offer something every day, you interact with your audience through comments and contributions, you have become gatekeepers of information, and you even met f2f. and did you tune down your efforts once the season was over? no, you keep thinking of how to keep and engage your audience. you guys exemplify the best that the internet has to offer. regular people that devote their time and energy to creating something that many can participate in. keep up the good work!
I must agree with most comments here. Most of my friends don't understand why I check this site so many times a day but I love BPR. I was a lurker for a long time but after I read everyone re-caps about their NY trip I just had to join in the fun. I thought"these people are my kind of people" plus they love the same show I do!! Congratulations-BPR deserves it.
When I lucked into this site, I was unfamiliar with blogging. I thought all blog sites were like this- I have been disappointed in other sites for other shows. This site has added greatly to my enojyment of the show... which I already loved. I have been on other message boards and blogsites, this is by far the most intelligent, witty and civil I have encountered. Thanks!
I'm just home from NYC and this is the first chance I've had to read these comments. BPR is pretty special isn't it? Thank you to all who contribute - especially to Tbone and The Scarlett.
Jan - I didn't read any mention of the tour either. I believe that is the event that truly cemented us as a "community." Thank you everyone who trusted us enough to come!
