Here is the relevant part of the article: While Bravo did not announce when it expects to broadcast Project Runway 3, the third season casting application -- also released as part of today's announcement -- would appear to hint that now that Project Runway has firmly established itself as far and away Bravo's biggest hit, the network plans to move the show from its present once-a-year schedule to the twice-a-year format typically adopted by most popular reality competition series. Thanks Tim B! Also, here is an interview with Daniel V.

I skimmed the bottom part of the article where it describes how the new format would work and it just sounds like the season 3 finalists will have even less time to prepare their final designs.

won't that degrade the quality of the show?

Hmmm. Will they still be able to use Parsons for Season 3? I recall Tim mentioning in his blog that they did the show at Parsons during the summer since school wasn't in session. Or maybe Season 3 designers will have even less time to complete challenges?

i as well! (laura k's response.)

This is terrible news...

I fear a drop in the quality of the show. More show=less anticipation and excitement.

This worries me. More is not necessarily better. I agree with all of the doubters here about the hazards: a diluted talent pool and overexposure of the product can very easily lessen the fun.

There's only one American Idol "season" per year, right? And it lasts a couple of months? Right? That's kind of a successful formula.... : )

JK - just when we thought we might be able to take a vacation...

I think its time for a "Dear Producers" post!

LauraK said...

Seriously, I NEED a vacation. NYC here I come!

I believe it is better that they stick to the same format.. I mean isn't there only one Great Fashion Week.

don't change it!! your going to ruin it!!!

this is great! Now they can do spring and fall fashion week. I wonder if they'll start showing this next season earlier, then?

BTW, Daniel graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology NOT Parsons...

ew, no good. I'm with the ppl worried about the quality.
...
of course i'm also worried about my own sanity. I dont think i could handle that much.

all you nay-sayers are NUTS!
would you rather wait for nine months again?
Hells no. I already feel empty inside knowing that next wednesday is going to be quiet and sad at 10pm.
I think it could still be a great success, and I never get tired of watching the same episodes as the rerun on bravo, so why not bring in some new meat?

Daniel said in that interview that last year auditions were at this time of year. So just b/c auditions are starting soon doesn't mean that there will be 2 seasons per year.

sandy j--I was logging on to say just that. Get your facts straight!

More seasons in a year worries me a bit--it is reality tv though. How long before they start adding other twists like boys vs. girls, or recent grads vs. older designers...

It is obvious to me that the producers of PR have developed a great formula. They have very talented editors who can keep us guessing up to the last minute.

Tim Gunn is terrific. Michael Kors is growing on me. I am almost starting to like Nina Garcia.

The success or failure of PR will be based on the designers that are picked for the cast. Personality and skill - a tough mix to find. Adding London to the mix could be very interesting. Eventually French and Italian designers too.

Top Chef ain't gonna cut it. I might watch the new Blow Out for a few weeks, but I thought Jonathan had run his course last year. What's next the Jonathan Hair Dressing College?

I needs me some more PR.

To quote Tim, this concerns me. It's not only Parsons that might not be available for two sessions, but Tim himself. He does actually still have a job at Parsons, courses to teach, etc. A big part of Tim's appeal is his "real-ness." I would hate to see him lose that by becoming attached to the show essentially full-time. Overexposure would be bad for both the show and for Tim, as far as I'm concerned.

Does anyone know how long it takes each season to tape? Are they having a challenge every week or every couple of days?

I too agree that more is more always better.

katiecoo said...

oops meant to write more is NOT always better.

Tbone said...

katiecoo - Emmett reported to us earlier that Season 2 taped from June 1 through July 3, 2005.

Season 1 was shot in August 2004. There is a very thin window around the summer session at Parsons where filming could occur.

They could very well shoot this in a studio or someplace else (they originally looked at space in the Atlas). But then the show would lose some of its charm, wouldn't it?

Hmmmm.......it would make sense to have two seasons coinciding with the 2 big Fashion Weeks. I think it could work.

Now that Bravo's lived through the process twice, I'm sure they have ways of cutting through the muck and streamlining processes.

We'll just have to wait and see.

AJ said...

So are they going to do NY Fashion Week and LA Fashion Week?

Spring vs Fall collections?

I think it's not a bad idea, but they shouldn't start it this year IMO...wait until the next go round....

LauraK said...

Aj, I think both Fashion Shows would be in New York. Who knows? It's not really confirmed. We'll have to wait and see!

Maybe they could have just one season and extend it? I think the beginning designers are auffed too quickly and we've all said that we'd love to see more designing, more fun time, more runway, more judging. Maybe two episodes for each challenge? They wouldn't have to extend the taping time significantly, just use all that footage we don't get to see. Make the challenges a bit more complicated with a little more time? I'm a little fearful, too. I don't want the Sopranos schedule but I can't take this. I'll lose my job and my family is going to lock me away.
